The Z is like a bad girlfriend -- so much drama but you can't let her go. So now I'm nervous. As part of the clutch job I did last summer I replaced the rear main seal but after driving 150 miles I noticed it did not completely stop the oil leak through the bell housing (although it slowed it down a lot). Now I've removed the real oil seal retainer to replace that gasket and noticed there are two grooves in the crankshaft! ![](http://home.comcast.net/~tanstrack/300ZX/RearOilSealRetainer.JPG)

The grooves separate the orange engine oil colored part from the silver. I imagine these grooves mate up with the oil seal lip and dust seal lip below. Is that correct, or have I found a much bigger problem? If I am correct it seems critical to install the rear main seal fully to match up to these grooves. ![](http://home.comcast.net/~tanstrack/300ZX/RearMainSealLips.JPG)
If I'm right and you could post a picture of the grooves in the crankshaft from your last build I'd much appreciate the piece of mind. Thanks.
